Sugar in Chocolate and Snacks

It’ll be no surprise to most people that chocolate and some other popular snacks or treats contain large amounts of sugar. However what did surprise me was that some of the ones marketed as healthier alternatives for kids had some of the highest amount.

I think no matter which chocolate bar you look at they all have pretty much similar percentages of sugar and fat overall, theres no chocolate bar that I could find which stands out from any of the others as having much less sugar. I was surprised at some of the cereal bars having as little sugar and fat as they do, but looking at the apple it was reassuring to see it comes in as having by far the lowest amount of sugars (11g) per 100g, had the lowest calories (80kcals) and had no fat.  The apple will also have lots of fibre in the skin to help breakdown the sugar much more slowly than the other snacks.

The marketing of these products especially the chocolate does concern me. Currently there is little regulation and the industry is for the most part self regulated, which can’t be a good thing. For example, their idea of self regulation after getting criticism of King Size bars was to change the name to a “Duo”, split the bar in 2 but still sell them in the same package. It reminds me of the Tobacco industry in the 1960’s.

What does become apparent when going through all of their figures is that it really comes down to the portion size and then to how often we have them. I try to have chocolate as an occasional treat or as fuel to use when entering a bike race. For example, I used a lot of these products in a 5 hour bike race I had just after taking the photos. Having now looked at these I hope you are better informed to decide on what you have as a treat and what you have as a snack. Controlling your portion size and how often you have them are essential.
