Before You Buy a Walking Pad: A Personal Trainer’s Checklist
A walking pad can be a great way to move more at home – or an expensive thing to store under the sofa. These questions help you work out whether one suits you, and which features matter for your situation.
1. What will you use it for?
Daily walking, walking at your desk, or fitness sessions? Most walking pads are built for walking, not running. If you want to jog, look at a treadmill instead.
2. When will you use it?
Be specific: “during calls at 11am” or “while watching TV after dinner”. If you cannot name a time, you probably will not use it.
3. Where will it live – and where will it be stored?
Measure the floor area, the storage spot and any doorways. Check the machine’s weight if you will be moving it every day.
4. Is the weight limit right for you?
Choose a model with a comfortable margin above your body weight. This guide to reading walking pad weight limits explains what the numbers mean.
5. Is the belt big enough?
Taller people and people with a long stride need more belt length. Short, narrow belts can feel cramped.
6. Do you need a handrail?
If your balance is not great, or you are getting back into exercise after a long break, a handrail can add confidence. Many walking pads do not have one.
7. How noisy is it?
Important for apartments, light sleepers and video calls. Check published noise figures and owner reviews, and plan to use a mat.
8. Speed and incline
For walking, a top speed of around 6 km/h is usually enough. Incline makes walking harder without going faster – useful if you want more of a workout.
9. Controls
Remote, app or buttons? A simple remote is often easiest when walking at a desk.
10. Delivery, warranty and returns
Check where the seller is based, how long delivery takes, what the warranty covers and how returns work for a heavy item.
A quick health check
If you have heart, balance or joint problems, ask your GP or physiotherapist whether walking on a moving belt is suitable for you.
